Crystal Ball 2012

With the new year upon us, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what this year might bring. I am hoping for a kindler, gentler 2012. 2011 was incredibly stressful for everyone - the world still seemed to be on edge from the recession. For that reason, I think most people are looking for a return to a simpler life and some normalcy while also valuing what the earth already provides for us outside of our material possessions. That's why I'm predicting the following trends for this year:

Bikes - Already gaining lots of traction in Europe and New York, bikes are definitely the way to get around the city these days. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see people riding down the street with their farmer's market haul in a basket on front (or back) of their bike.

Back to Nature - I was just reading Conde Nast Traveler and they had a fantastic line-up of "quiet places" trips for people who need to completely disconnect and retreat to a deserted isle. While that's all well and good for those who can afford a $30k vacation, I do think there will be a return to nature this year with more visitors to our national parks and an appreciation for visiting endangered wildlife, native tribes and more of the bounty that this beautiful planet has to offer.

Clean Eating - Here in sunny SoCal, the detox is a big, big thing. In fact, we just got a Detox Lounge in our neighborhood, which I love. I also love Cheetos. But instead of eating Cheetos, I'm going to focus on cleaner eating this year. Beans, fresh/locally grown fruits and veggies. Start your day with a glass of lemon water to help counteract the toxins and acid in your cup of coffee - your tummy will thank you.

Classics - In fashion, there is also a return to basics...or classics. Sure, there will be trends everyone still has to jump on, but I think customers are looking for value and quality in classic pieces they can mix and match with the more trendy. Refer to my earlier post on Ines de la Fressange's book or J. Crew's latest collection for a great line-up of classic wardrobe pieces.

Good deeds/good people - The backlash against the Kardashians is just the start of a continued disassociation with bling and mean girls. The buzz this year will be all about those who are doing good or celebrities who are actually nice. Think of the shift in judging style on last year's American Idol and you'll see where I'm headed with this. Greed is no longer good.

Rather than follow everyone else with a spur-of-the-moment decision on best dressed, I've decided I like to mull it over a little. And, it's hard to see all the dresses because the red carpet and fashion police shows only give you a sampling of all the fashion that's on hand, so I have to do a little internet digging to make sure I'm not overlooking something worthy. My picks for this year's Emmy Awards:

Cabinet of Curiosity

Gwynn Griffith has a twinkle in her eye. I love the mental picture that conjures at the end of the feature on her San Antonio home in this month's Elle Decor. Reminiscent of one of my favorite finds in Paris, Deyrolle, her home is truly a cabinet of curiosities. Most of all, I love that the outside facade - an old factory building - belies what's inside. Dreamy.

Horse Head

Horses have always been a recurring theme here on ye olde blog, and they continue to be as visions of the big, beautiful creatures dance in my head. This week, my favorite morning escape The Today Show did a profile on an organization located here in sunny San Diego. TROTT helps retrain and find new homes for former racehorses who've passed their prime racing years (2 or 3 years old!). I won't get all negative on you here, because this is a happy blog - but animals who are useless to people after two years, not a good thing.

Anywho, I'm now volunteering with TROTT to help get some visibility for a fundraiser they're putting on later this month. It's so much fun, and lets me get a little horse back in my life. There are TROTT-like organizations all over this great big world, and they all can use your help in one way or another. Find one, and let God's creatures back into your heart...and head.

40 and Fabulous?

Fabuless is more like it. I turned 40 this May, and like magic when the clock struck twelve, I became some weird, self aware, awake person. Wait a minute, I actually feel kind of like I did before I went to college!

I told you (all 24 of you dear readers) when I started this blog it would not be about me. This post is an exception and I hope it will be the only one. But, I wanted to share my plight in a public forum not only to keep myself honest as I trudge through my fourth decade on this planet, but also so that those of you who haven’t yet reached this ripe old age can learn from my mistakes. For aging wisely is also an ingredient of a fabulous, fun life.

So, why the mid-life crisis? I realized today while in the presence of some truly amazing women at BlogHer that I completely lost myself somewhere in my early 20s. How, I do not know. I was always clear about who I wanted to be and what I would be doing by now. If you’d asked me at 23 where I would be today, I would have stated definitively “living in France with my horses, dogs and sheep, doing marketing for Chanel and being a happy, fulfilled and fit me.”

What happened isn’t far off. I live in a beautiful seaside town, I have the most adorable dog, a wonderful husband, and I do marketing (ok, PR) for…a chicken company. I am also carrying around about 20 extra pounds, haven’t ridden a horse in two years and only see France in my dreams and on (very) occasional visits. Maybe I’m a little off track, but it’s not what worries me. I’m still missing something, and it isn’t the horses. Can blogging help get your groove back? For some reason, I think it can help and I’m willing to put everything I can into it to find out!

One of the disadvantages in being somewhat creatively inclined is that it's easy to get fixated on something. Like finding the perfect pair of black pants with just the right flap pockets and leg width. Or the perfect pillow, throw blanket or piece of artwork depicting an eight-legged sea creature.

Yes, that's right. I'm fixated on that eight-legged wonder, the octopus, right now. Why, you might ask? Well, have you ever noticed that in cartoons, they're always smiling? They also display some of nature's most interesting colors and gelatinous transparency. And, when you go visit them at the zoo, they're always in hiding, so it's pretty rare that you get to see them in action. Much cooler than the alien-esque squid, the octopus always keeps you guessing.

Made to Run

I'm not a runner, never have been. I mean this in the most non-runner way...really. Like Forrest Gump, I was advised to wear leg braces as a child. But like the Taurus that I am, I rejected the unfashionable footware, so my legs aren't exactly the model of efficiency. For some crazy reason when my hubby got deployed to Iraq in 2009 I decided it might be a good year to try running...a half marathon. Let's just say I checked that off my list and I haven't run more than three miles in a day since. But, I've got the bug again and thought it might be fun to share some things that helped make me into a runner. If you're considering starting or continuing a running program, I hope this helps:

1. Madonna - Any Madonna track will do, but for me, it was the song Jump that got me through the long runs when I just didn't think I could go another step. Start with Jump, then make yourself a running playlist the length of your target run - that way, you can keep going till the songs run out.
2. Nike capri running pants - Even when I was sweating to the core, I still felt chic in these things. I like these new Livestrong ones for a good cause.
3. Balega socks - Without the purchase of my first pair, I never would have run a half marathon. These socks are like clouds for your feet.
4. Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap - Totally reinvigorating when you're achy and tired
5. Reward - I don't have a competitive bone in my body, so reward is important to me. It could be an extra big glass of wine that night, or a piece of chocolate...or a new running outfit. Whatever, make sure the reward is in line with the goal (i.e., hitting your first five miles = new outfit).
6. Setting - Pick somewhere that inspires you to do better. Don't just run by the side of any old road - run along the river, on the beach, in a beautiful park. If you're traveling, take your running shoes and see the sights - running is free after all.

Walkin' on Sunshine

I've never been a tennis shoes sort of gal. Walking the dog in these parts means my Chanel ballet slippers, Frye boots or some other sort of sandal. Until I stepped in a big ole pile of dog poo, my go to dog walking shoes (and neighborhood cruisers) were my leopard flats. Since those went the way of the trash, I've been searching endlessly for the right pair of leopards to get my walk on, while still looking somewhat cute.

Well ladies, I've found the answer. Toms has entered into partnership with Neiman Marcus (or Needless Mark-up for those so inclined) to create the most fab, comfortable and thoughtful urban walkers yet. These have unique designs (big skulls on black velvet, stripes, zebra, the aforementioned leopard), and special bouncy soles and insoles.

Indecision 2011

Either my fashion radar is mellowing as I age or the girls did something very, very right at last night's Academy Awards show. I didn't really find too much to complain about, but more shockingly, I still haven't put a stake in the ground about my best dressed...and I'm not sure I will. So, this time I'm going to give out a few awards:

1. Best Dress
I'm not saying I'm totally in awe of the overall look (the earrings should have been emeralds or some other colored gem), but my hands-down favorite dress was this lovely KaufmanFranco black number on the equally stunning Camila Alves. And, it had pockets!

2. Best Hair
I'm completely obsessed with this hair - and I kind of love her hippie/French name too. Sunrise Coigney, wife of uber bohemian hottie Mark Ruffalo, can I have your hair and your hubby?

3. Best Back
ScarJo. Love the curves. Love the messy hair.

4. Best Anne Hathaway Dress Change
Shimmying Oscar de la Renta.

5. Best Girl Crush
Yes, I have a girl crush on Gwyneth. She's just so perfect (almost always).

6. Best Boy
Colin Firth. Mr. Darcy. Totally deserving. Charming. Wearing Tom Ford.

Inspiration 2011

At last! I've had a creative breakthrough instead of a creative breakdown. Over the last week my brain has been up to its usual fun, taking in the surroundings and then dreaming up all sorts of new stuff. Thank goodness, I think I may be back! Here's what's inspiring me right now!

1. Sheep
No surprise here, I love animals. But I think sheep are in for a real boom soon - they'll be replacing fancy chickens as the next big trend in animal husbandry.

2. Do-gooders
The recession mindset is here to stay folks. No longer will you be the shit for having the "it" bag, a big expensive car or shiniest bling. Think Philippe Cousteau instead of Paris Hilton.

3. War Horse
I've written about this before. If you didn't read it, I'm reminding you. And, I'm right.

4. Lauren Bacall hair and natural brows
See above samples of perfect beauty.

5. 70s style, bleached-out bell bottom jeans
I admit, it's going to be hard to give up my dark and skinnies. These things require some serious working out to look good in. Girls, get your leotards!

SAG Showdown

The SAGs are one of those low-key Hollywood nights where it's nice to see people's true sense of black-tie style come out (or not). Sunday night's affair was a pretty good showing. I had to sit with the dresses for a few days to decide my favorites - but they ended up being the same as they were at showtime. Haven't I learned by now? One should always go with their gut.

Top billing goes to Amy Adams in Herve Leroux. I just love this dress, the hair and earrings. And no, it's not fit to total and complete perfection, but she looks amazing anyway. And, I hate big boobs, so the fact that her boobs aren't all over the place makes me happy.

Oh can I please wear Leah Michele's Oscar de la Renta for my 40th birthday party? And have her body to go with it? I adore this dress, her soft hair and simple makeup.

Honorable mentions go to January Jones for totally mixing it up from the Globes, Julie Bowen for wearing an amazing Malandrino jumpsuit and Hailee Steinfeld for being so darn cute in Prada.

Golden Girls

I feel a teeny bit of remorse today. I'm usually so even keeled, gracious and careful with my words in the hopes not to offend. However, in the Twitter-induced haze last night wrought, I may have been too harsh on the starlets, golden oldies and others in my criticism of the Golden Globes red carpet - perspective only 24 hours of distance can provide. The ladies looked lovely. However, I will caveat the below list of the well-dressed with my continuing assertion that there was a lot of disappointment for me in this year's Globes fashion round-up. With all of the A-listers in attendance, there was huge opportunity for a fashion extravaganza the likes of which we've never seen. Here goes anyway...

I could give worst dressed to a litany of people, but I'm going to award it to Helena Bonham Carter. Mostly I'm giving it to her because all of these fashion "experts" on TV are fawning over how much they love her for her originality and style. BS, there is just nothing stylish about her rat's nest of hair, dress or mismatched shoes from last night. She did it just to be the train wreck. Oh, and for most-overly praised, the award goes to Olivia Wilde. Sorry, it was just pretty...boring.

Tron's Style Legacy

I was not at all excited about seeing Tron. I went along for the ride. It was good. I left surprised, not only that I liked it, but that I got inspired by the sets and costumes - a nice bit of 80s nostalgia didn't hurt. The costumes with their glowing strips of white and orange will be all over the place come fall runways...and Halloween. The girls are gorgeous and their hair and makeup will also be all over the place. The best part, the above apartment inside the computer-generated world. The people at Disney done good.

How is it that I've lived in San Diego since April and still not posted on ye olde blog about it? I think I've been overwhelmed by the ongoing aura of vacation, vast number of things to do and sights to see, and the unavoidable work and related business travel I've undertaken in said past six months. Anyway, I haven't even scratched the surface but I'm ready to spill about a few of my favorite discoveries so far - here are my top five:

1. Coronado Dog Beach - Hands down, my favorite place to spend my evenings. Dogs, dolphins, endless ocean views. Hint: If you don't like dogs, keep out.

2. Cucina Urbana - I've been to restaurants, lots of restaurants. This is one of my all-time favorites. Ever.

3. Humphrey's - Magical, musical heaven. Outdoor concert venue by the boats, with waitress service from bar-to-seat so you don't even have to get up for another glass of wine.

4. The Q - An architectural stunner in the heart of Little Italy. I'm obsessed with this building.

5. The Seals at the Children's Pool in La Jolla - OK, I know this is on every tourist list but I was a girl with about 20 harbor seal stuffed animals. These are real. Check out my friend Ashley's pics from her visit (And above).

I'll post some more in about six months.

Fall Flung

I'm somewhat uninspired this fall, what with my relocation to California and the year of perpetual summer (plus, my Vogue September issue STILL hasn't come). Now, don't get me wrong, California is inspiring...the weather just doesn't support a seasonal wardrobe change. In spite of the fact I now live in yoga clothes and don't brush my hair, I still love a good fall fashion shopping spree. This year, I thought I'd give you my list so you can go out and prep for the cold weather and I can live vicariously. Enjoy!

Leather - Opera length gloves (please wear with short or 3/4 sleeves, not dresses). T-shirts. Mini skirts. Tailored jackets. Just get something.

Wide-legged trousers - Thank you Celine.

Camel blazer or coat - Go the menswear route. Or unexpected with peekaboos.

Red - Granted, I posted a bathing suit. But this one is so beautiful you could wear it as a tank under a cardigan and pants.

Crossbody - This is the ultimate, and believe me, I've been looking forever.

Cozy knitwear - My absolute favorite look of all is this sweater and skirt combo. Give it a minute to load.

Wrap belt and floor-length skirt - You don't have to wear these together. This epitomizes fall for me.

Hooves and Hornblowers

New York is a city of old and new, big and small, dirt and diamonds. I love it. Here are a few of my most recent finds – include them on your next itinerary:

JoJo - A gem of fine dining. Steep Upper East Side townhouse. Romantic and relatively well-priced for the Jean-Georges Vongerichten family of restos.

The Crangi Family Project - An amazing jewelbox. This place is not to be missed. I could have bought every single piece in there if I'd recently won the lottery.

Rooftop bar at the Met - We were lucky enough to be in town while the Big Bambu exhibit was up. Amazing views of the city overlooking Central Park. The bar is seasonal so check the schedule before you go.

The High Line - Go in the morning with your coffee and a lavender doughnut. Walk the whole thing. Start at the north end. Donate and get a cute enviro-friendly tote bag.

Meatpacking shopping - Take the stairs down at the end of the High Line. Cross the street. Shopping heaven. Jeffrey. Vince. Tory Burch. Stella McCartney. DVF. The Pratique Guide looks fun, and there's a free guide for the taking too.

Sunshine Girl

Despite her super dry sense of humor, penchant for the offbeat and gorgeously vampy red hair, I still think of Spare-Time Shooter, JS colleague and friend Ashley Harp as a sunshine girl. I think her photographs are most telling – she always captures just the right light. Check out her blog, which features photos from a recent visit to my new city, my dog, and lots of other pretty stuff. If you want to die laughing over how hard it was to trek across country to take these shots read about it on her other blog.

I was just sitting next to this guy at the airport I could have sworn was Frank from The Bachelorette. Frankly (tee hee), he was super skinny, kinda smelly, but weirdly cute. I think Frank has great potential to be a star - I have no idea what his talent is, but to me he just has that "it" factor or je ne sais quoi (despite his wife beater-esque T on last week's episode). Watch for him.

Note: Now that I see what a big, fat loser Frank is, I kind of regret this post. I'm leaving it, just sayin'.

Mickey and Minis

I so dreaded going to Orlando on business. I thought, what can be worse than a humid, alligator-infested, land-locked Florida city? Well folks, I was wrong. What I discovered is Orlando is kinda cool. Sure, it still has mosquitoes the size of dogs, lightning (lots of it) and the aforementioned alligators, but it has some other neat stuff too. Here's a quick download from my very brief trip:

Thornton Park - A charming, tiny downtown among a stunning neighborhood of parks, lakes and cute cottages and bungalows. Stop for a drink or two and stroll.
College Park - Another park-themed neighborhood, this area is a little more grungy than Thornton Park, but still has a lot of character. I was especially fond of the neighborhood's 50s-era Publix, which took me back to my 70s-era childhood. Jack Kerouac lived here.
Outlet malls - There is some darn good shopping here, including one of the few outlet malls in the U.S. with European labels. Dior, Ferragamo, MaxMara, Fendi, Marni, Etro.
Disney, Sea World and other worlds of fun for those who still like to wear mouse ears (like me).

Oh, oh Domino

The best thing to happen to me since Domino unexpectedly shut its doors (and I got a crummy Glamour subscription in its place) is today's discovery of doppelganger Lonny Magazine. I'd heard this was out there but kept forgetting the site, so clearly I'm living under a rock. Oh so exciting!! The best part, you can scroll over items pictured or ads to click directly to the web site to buy.

Desperation Hot Fudge Sauce

It's Sunday night. You desperately need a hot fudge sundae, but alas, no fudge in sight. Here's a recipe that will give you the fix you need - it only takes about 2 minutes out of your couch time and it can be accomplished with no grocery store runs.

3 Dove milk chocolates (I'm sure dark would work too)
2-3 Tbs. fat-free (or regular) Half n Half
Vanilla ice cream (preferably Breyers All Natural Vanilla)

Unwrap the three Doves and do not eat while unwrapping. Place in a small microwavable bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds. Check. Microwave again for 20-30 seconds until you can easily stir all three into a big chocolately swirl. Add a Tbs. of Half n Half. Stir. Add another Tbs. of Half n Half. Stir, making sure the chocolate is not hardening. Microwave another 20-30 seconds until mixture is hot.

Scoop however many scoops of vanilla into a separate bowl. Pour the hot fudge sauce on top and let it melt the ice cream a little. Eat and enjoy.

If you're feeling really energetic, you might also try:

- Adding a Tbs. of coffee to the chocolate in place of Half n Half (or in addition to)

- Adding nuts - chopped pecans preferably

- Putting a cherry on top

Are You Red-dy?

For two years now I've been stalking storefronts for the perfect red top I once saw on the Marni rack at one of my favorite places to waste time. Countless salespeople have told me, "red is not in this season," blue is, or green, or yellow, or white. Whatever. I want red. Lo and behold, that bell-weather of fashion Times is now predicting red will be big for fall. Hallelujah.

A few weeks ago, one of my dreams came true. I met the heir to Tony Duquette's design throne. And then, I was promptly invited to visit Dawnridge, Duquette's former estate and current home to the aforementioned heir, Hutton Wilkinson. The Bev Hills fantasy-land is chronicled in part in Hutton's new coffee table book More is More, which is total eye candy. I am dreaming up all sorts of new ideas for the Duquette brand. I'm sure my visit will inspire even more of my hare-brained ideas - stay tuned.

Note: I received an email today from the attorney for the Duquette estate and have updated my original post (am glad to see someone's reading this). My intent was not to say that the brand needed reviving, but that I am excited by the momentum the brand is now seeing. It's clear that the team is working hard to bring the brand to the forefront once again. I'm only hoping my little blog post will help spread the word to those outside the colony of design tastemakers.

Rock of Ages

I've always dreamed of a cross-country journey, so our trek across the southern U.S. to get from The ATL to Cali was supposed to be the ultimate adventure. Nonetheless, we were racing against the clock and it turned into a long haul instead of a leisurely ride to see the largest ball of twine. But, we did still see some neat stuff. Here's a quick recap of the highlights:

1. Alabama countryside - I can't say I was expecting anything at all, so how could I have been disappointed? The road between Montgomery and Selma (Hwy. 80 AKA the Selma-to-Montgomery Trail) was surprisingly pretty - rolling hills, yellow fields and lots of fresh, spring greenery.

2. Crossing the Mighty Mississipp - The bridges in Vicksburg, crossing from MS to LA were pretty monumental.

3. East Texas - As a fan of Friday Night Lights, I could just see Riggins and crew playing football and drinking beer in the hills of East Texas. A stop to see family in Tyler (esp. our adorable nephew, Dallas) was a highlight.

4. West Texas - I didn't think anything could be uglier than W. Texas after we passed Dallas and drove for hours, and hours, and hours. I was shocked when we started to see mountains in the distance and discovered how beautiful it was. The Guadalupes have always held a mystique for my dad, and I felt the same way. It was so peaceful driving through and I can't wait to go back. Plus, Marfa is a fascinating town I'm dying to visit.

5. Las Cruces, NM - El Paso was pretty darn scary, I have to admit. The traffic was nuts. It was NM or bust, and we made it to Las Cruces to stay at the pet-friendly Hotel Encanto. It was a little slice of heaven.

6. Imperial Dunes - Seriously, could California get any cooler? I had no idea what we were going to see when we crossed the border to our new home state. Sand dunes like I didn't know existed in the U.S. - Sahara-size, humongous dunes. So amazing - if I wasn't so afraid of the border patrol (they take their jobs very, very seriously) I would have gotten out, run to the top and rolled all the way down.

7. Cleveland Natl Forest - Remember Rock Biter in Neverending Story? The eastern side of the mountains in Cleveland National Forest look like he's chewed em up and spit em out. When you come down, you pass through the Lagunas, enter the hill country east of SD and then ride on down to the ocean. It's like heaven.

Indecision 2010

Never have I been so flummoxed by my red carpet opinion as with this year's Oscars. I have waited far too long to post my faves, possibly because they aren't actors at all - they're both part of the fashion world in some way. I wish I had an actor and actress to include here, but they were all too pretty and predictable (or atrocious) so I'm going to stick with those that hit me first:

Tom Ford - The ne plus ultra in men's grooming and style. If I could come back as someone in my next life, it'd be Tom Ford. Bonus, a nod to Coco with the camellia.

Sandy Powell - Winner for Costume Design for The Young Victoria. I don't love her accessories, but the dress shall overcome. I would have worn it plain. The low back is enough of an accessory.

Phillip Lim - I'm lucky enough to have a few items from 3.1 and they are my absolute favorite works of art in my closet. His stuff is RTW priced but is still pure genius. Here's a peek inside his apartment from The Times. After reading this profile, I think we're soul mates.

Jamie Cullum - Something in his songs just get me. Saw him last night in concert and he's way better live - I cried during All at Sea, what a sap (hey, 2009 was a rough year and the song was there for me). His new album The Pursuit was just released.

The Times Style Magazine - I'm pretty ticked that I ended my subscription just before this issue came out. Reading The Times on the weekend with my cup of java is transporting.

Keurig Coffeemaker - So fun to try new flavors. Today I'm having Spicy Mayan Mocha. Delish.

Someday, spring will come again. And when it does, we’ll all be cheering from the rooftops for clothes that show a little skin. In an effort to inject a little fun into spring dressing (and dreaming), here’s the upcoming season’s inspiration wish list done head to toe.

Headgear – Something creative on the head is a must. Try metallic headbands, Roman-inspired leaf vines, mini tiaras, animal ears…even funny hats, just make it different and wear with bedhead.

Face – Clean, healthy and slightly tan. Makeup should only enhance what’s natural, not mask or shade.

This rainy Sunday marks the semi-official start of the 2010 glam season out west, so let's have a little red carpet revelry for the Golden Globes! It's oh so easy to judge from the comfort of the leather recliner, decked out in my skinny jeans, Marmot vest, J. Crew cashmere and Fuggs (that's faux Uggs to you cave dwellers - and yes, they are my house shoes). With preliminary results now in, here are my top vote-getters for best and absolute worst:

Sexiest. Man. Alive. Hands down. (I cannot find a photo that isn't in flash, stay tuned...)

I love Herve Leger as much as the next girl, but please cover your boobs. The whole mystique of the Leger dress is how bandages cover your body parts and leave a little mystery as to what's below. Ugh. (I'm not showing a picture, no one should be rewarded for that.)

Lap Top Love

Whoosh...though I'm somewhat tech savvy, I am just now realizing the joy of the laptop while watching TV - how have I missed out on this for so long? While I'm sitting here loving my laptop, I figured I might as well mention a few other things to love (or at least like a lot) right now.

1. Marion Cotillard - I think I may have been one of the few who actually appreciated her Gaultier scale dress at the Oscar's, and I continue to have a girl crush. To fully understand, just go see Nine and watch her eyes. They are positively the most intriguing pair of eyes I've ever seen - so much life in there, they shine like little crystals.

2. Glitter - In any form, for makeup, decor, whatever. Also, strong mention of glitter in the song "Heads will roll" - glitter on the wet streets, glitter over everything, the glitter's all wet...Of course, Martha's elves makes the best. For eyes, Nars Cream Shadow (Corfu's in my basket).

3. 5 - Still haven't made your resolutions for 2010 and need a little nudge? This is the book for you. Read it and make your dreams come true. No, it's not magic -- but maybe you are. Happy New Year!

The Saints are Calling...

As I prepare for my next trip west over the New Year's holiday, I realized I still haven't written about my fabulous trip to Santa Barbara in September. So, what's a must there? Read on...

Stay

We stayed at The Canary. I'm pretty much obsessed with Spanish architecture, white stucco, dark wood, so I was in heaven. And, they give all the guests rubber froggies for the bath - ours now sits in our tub at home so it can remind me of our amazing trip. There are a lot of beautiful hotels in Santa Barbara, so pick the one that fits your personality best.

Shop

Santa Barbara has just about anything you might desire, with Saks, Nordstrom, Apple and the local Blue Bee panoply at your toes along State St. Downtown Montecito (vacation home to Oprah) will give you your mega-luxury fix, and there are cute antique shops hidden along the 1. I recommend just getting off the road and toodling around.

Eat

Hmm, one of my favorite subjects. For breakfast, definitely The Original Sambo's on the beach. For sushi, Arigato. For Mexican, Carlitos or Julia Child's favorite La Super-Rica Taqueria (sadly, we didn't get to try it). For steak, Holdren's. For guac, you must, must, must go for the Avofest in Carpinteria (Oct. 1-3, 2010). Beer, Island Brewing Company. And finally, wine - drive up to Los Olivos with your DD. Stop off in Solvang on the way for your fill of kitsch and some darn good Danish pancakes.

Splurge

If you've got some extra pocket change, stay or eat at the San Ysidro Ranch. The legendary honeymoon escape for Jackie and JFK, this place is so special even for normal couples. Dinner in the Stonehouse at sunset may be one of my most memorable meals ever.

Sid is Vicious

If I was a boy, I’d only shop at Sid Mashburn. Why, it’s even heaven for a fashion-obsessed girl like me – hmm, come to think of it, why didn’t I buy myself a great men’s shirt to wear with my favorite jeans? Tailors in the window with their little (er, I mean manly) sewing machines, an amazing horse painting over the check-out, ping pong and cocktails while you shop - what’s not to love? Plus, the guys that work there rock the clothes and will inspire you to try something a little different.

My fashion radar is going off again. Here are a few predictions for what’s next:
White tights – cute in a schoolgirl sort of way, but made more interesting and sophisticated by pairing them with structured dresses, black poufy skirts and chunky ankle boots.

Velvet – I tried on a fantastic, draped DVF dress in ultra-soft velvet that I am still dying over (OK, I just bought it). Baroque color combos and creative shapes are a must to keep the look from getting too precious or Juicy-sweatsuit-esque (yuck).

Braids – Follow the lead of California’s surfer girls and put a single mini braid on each side of your center part before pulling up in a pony, or two big side braids or one big braid down the back – long hair is a must to work this look, so start growing out now.

Despite my yuppified lifestyle, I am at my core, still the hippie child running on the beach in nothing but my birthday suit. In my old age, I've come to appreciate the things you showed me. I'm predicting a trend come fall, and I'm going to name it "Nib-bling." Blatant bling is out, but there are still elements of bling - mini blings or nibbles if you will - that will be in. Metal studs, crystals, gold accents and shiny makeup will grace the streets in a way that still makes people shine, just in a less - ummm, showy -- way.

A Horse is a Horse?

Not when they're a puppet! I'm bloody mad I didn't take the leap of faith and see War Horse when I was in London, December 2008. Now that I've seen the amazing puppetry involved, I need a time machine to take me back - or push me forward to 2011, when the play will come to New York.

Lifesize horse puppets grace the stage in the adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel by the same name. Apparently, they leave not a dry eye in the house.

Today's installment in honor of Bastille Day is marked by some incredibly intriguing spottings from this sit-back-and-observe kind of gal.

A celebratory Bastille Day happy hour was marked with fun, girly conversation, champagne, cheese (but, of course) and sweat (we did sit outside). But as usual in my case, the sights were the most compelling part of the evening. Unfortunately, I did not capture these sights on film for posterity, but I think we witnessed what could be best described as the ne plus ultra of Glamour don'ts at Atmosphere tonight. A 60-plus something and her wild-n-crazy husband glammed it up for the big Frenchie night - she in a white, cut-off jean skirt with belly and breast-baring low cut maroon bathing suit(?). The outfit can best be described as Blanche from Golden Girls meets Borat in his green unitard. Mon dieu!

Cap that off with a rotund bike rider replete with helmet and zebra-striped tee and the party was on! Guess my Louboutins and YSL handbag were a little overdone.

When I was in Santa Monica last month, I was intrigued by two dinosaur sculptures covered in ivy in the 3rd Avenue mall. What I didn't know is that I was looking at the work of two living legends in French sculpture, who I serendipitously happened across again on my visit to Serenbe where artist-in-residence Tom Swanston showed me a book on their works.

The Lalannes, Claude and Francois-Xavier, live on a 30-acre farm outside Paris and sculpt anthropomorphic animals out of bronze, primarily. I love anything animal, but these exquisitely detailed and beautiful pieces set off a totally different sort of creative gene in my brain. Take a look and get your creative juices flowing.

Don't Drink and...Dress

There are some people in this world (like me) who take both people watching and fashion very seriously. There are others who think it's all a big joke and dress to impress leaving all of us in the other category to utter, "what were they thinking?"

At tonight's The Big Finish party benefiting the High Museum of Art, there were residents of both camps in attendance. Sure, there were some well-dressed Atlanta recessionistas in the house, including the requisite SEC-gameday-esque Tori Burchettes and their bow-tied companions, and what appeared to be fledgling designers slash stylists trolling the halls. But what really caught my attention were those no holds barred fashion don'ts. Here's a quick overview in our first-ever fashion faux pas extravaganza:

It's easier being green.

My buzzometer went off this weekend (finally!) following an inspirational visit to Serenbe. I got married there almost seven years ago and always enjoy heading down to see what's new. It got me thinking a lot about being green - and not in a Kermit THE Frog kind of way.

I work with a lot of clients who have green teams, sustainability missions and more, and I myself try to be energy-mindful and don't use plastic bags. But there's much more to it and I'm excited to see a lot of really great green communities coming online in spite of the economy. Here are a few of my faves:

New World Home Atlanta - It's not even a neighborhood (yet) but these eco-friendly houses are so darn charming, I want one! And, they're modular! You have to see it in person to really get the full picture.

The Brookwood (full disclosure, this is one of my clients, but I can still like it!) - Atlanta's first LEED-designed high-rise condo, The Brookwood is gorgeous! I've seen a lot of condos, and this is the first I can truly see myself living in thanks to the clever design and development team.

Serenbe - The grandaddy of green living in Atlanta, this lush spot is away from it all, but well worth the drive. That's the only problem - the commute alone probably makes up for all the earth-saving you're doing by living there.

Spring Shopping Guide

For me, Daylight Savings Time always marks the start of spring. This year, despite the fact that everyone's on a budget, there are a few additions you can make to your wardrobe to inject a little fun and start spring off on the right foot! Here are my top picks:

- Thong sandals - J Crew has some great ones in a variety of colors
- Boyfriend jeans - the more trashed and torn, the better
- Cardigan - three-quarter sleeves are a must, dusty pink is a great color option
- Chunky necklaces - a carry-over from fall, these are still a great accent
- Hobo bag - slouchier and hippier than we've seen in a while, make sure yours is made of ultra-soft leather and preferably gray, blue, tan or ivory
- Spring scarves - in black or white, they go with everything
- Ultra-high, statement heels - they're the new "it" bag
- A flowy, pleated dress in a fun color

Fashion Flu

Gosh darn it, the flu has held me down long enough and I've got to break free. Sunday night's Oscar broadcast and "Super Bowl o' fashion" was dampened by the onset of a viral plague, but it won't befall the muddy-headed fashion commentary I've been waiting a whole year to write (read at your own risk).

The Winners and the Losers
Honestly, I can't say there was one red carpet walker I felt stole the show, which is kind of a disappointment. I also can't say there was a horrid display of bad taste, which means most are getting it somewhat right, but not totally.

Here's my rundown of the B+ vote-getters in my book:

Taraji Henson - Gorgeous gown and just the right jewels, perfect hair - pretty much flawless

John Legend - Well-suited in his classic tux with a slim, modern cut

Natalie Portman - Possibly the stand-out of the night both for the color and the outfit's overall simplicity

Robert Pattinson - Yummy in all his delicious Edward Cullen-ness. A big thank you to the Academy for including him in the line up.

Mickey Rourke - An honorable mention for his originality, that's what fashion is made of folks. Plus, I adore that he loved his dog so much.

Word of the Month: Draconian

Ga Ga for LA LA

Coming back from the Left Coast can be exhausting - that time change doesn't seem like much, but it hits you like a ton of bricks on your first Monday back in the real world. I'm a little overdue here, but wanted to give a quick rundown of my Top Five Los Angeles must-dos:

1. Santa Monica - Take a run in Palisades Park overlooking the beach - it's doggy and people-watching heaven. Afterwards, grab a cup of coffee at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and if it's a Saturday, head on over to the farmer's market. Next time, I'm staying at the Fairmont.
2. Sushi at Sushi Katsu-ya - Yum. Spicy tuna on crispy rice, red wine. Yum.
3. Brentwood Country Mart - I'd live here if I could.
4. Drive by the Playboy Mansion - you can't see much but it's still pretty darn neat and you might see a bunny or two stumbling in...or out.
5. Rodeo Drive and beyond - any shopaholic has to at least take a gander. Have a glass of wine on Via Rodeo, watch the hordes of people and then head over to Neimans, Saks and Barney's for some real shopping.

Itty Bitty

I heart Bitty. Mark Bittman, he of New York Times foodie fame, is just so great. I love that he loves food. I love his dry sense of humor. I love that he's a minimalist who enjoys the simple flavors of real food and doesn't try to get all Gourmet magazine-fancy on you.

After further analysis of the Golden Globes' looks from Sunday's spectacular, I've made a final decision on my best dressed picks. I won't be panning anyone's outfits here this time around, although I will give Drew Barrymore's hair an honorable mention for horrid behavior.

Best Dressed Woman: Cameron Diaz
Flawless, pink Chanel - as usual, Cameron is setting trends for spring.

Best Dressed Man: Tom Cruise
I haven't lately been a fan, but whatever Katie's putting in the water (or the plastic surgery budget) is working. This man looked impeccable and like an old-fashioned movie star.

Two for One

Since it's Friday, I thought I'd post a two-for-one in honor of happy hour (and because I can't sleep!).

The second most important thing I need to tell you about today is Lady Antebellum. I was lucky enough to catch on to them during my much-needed holiday break, and I have to let the cat out of the bag now before they get too famous.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of country music - despite the fact that my husband is from Nashville. But, I've got to give it to this band - they've got that all-powerful star quality that you just can't deny. And, I have to admit, it doesn't hurt that lead-singer Charles Kelley is flat-out sexy (and a fellow Georgia Bulldog).

Try 'em out, before someone else tells you to.

Hot Child in The City

Hey there Upper East Siders. If you're a fan of all things trival (aka The Hills), there's a new gig in town, er, I mean the City. I have to apologize for being slightly behind the curve on this one, but I have to post info. on The City for those fashion and gossip mongers who aren't already aware.

The spin-off of the top-rated MTV series, The Hills, is now in full-swing this season on MTV, and what a swing it is. Fashion, oh my. Male models, oh my. Catty society girls, oh my. I love it!

Watch it now to see what DVF is preparing for Spring 2009 so you can hit the streets in the latest before everyone else, and watch especially for "social" Olivia Palermo's pouty looks every time she asks about Whitney's beau, Jay. LC better watch out, or her reign will soon be over - everyone knows NYC is much more fascinating than LA.

Road Weary

After too much road time, I decided to stop the blogging nonsense. There was nothing trendy, chic or "it" about our destinations - despite the fact we did have a fab time. I will provide a few quick tips here about our last stops in Nashville and Chattanooga in case you're planning a trip:

Union Station Hotel - gorgeous!
Loveless Cafe - delicious (save your calories up though)!
Green Hills Mall - sad and lonely, I realize how lucky we Atlantans are with all of the shopping options despite my lust after New York's shopping institutions
Mafiozza's Pizza - quite the scene and some delicious antipasti

Chattanooga
Bluff View Inn - I've said it before, a gem for a weekend jaunt
St. John's Restaurant - creative food with a price tag fit for the big city
Good friends and coming home to our beloved pups the next day - priceless!

Day 4 - Cross-Country

Today was another tough road-day, but we made great progress. After a leisurely morning in Alexandria, lunch and a loot-filled visit to my favorite sculptress Lisa Schumaier at the Torpedo Factory, we hit the road back south. After hitting our first traffic jam of the entire trip, we eventually made our way to horse country in the quaint and charming town of Middleburg, VA. After a too-quick stop, we hit the road again - destination Nashville.

Along the way, we made a detour to see the Natural Bridge and the spectacular Foamhenge - a replica of Stonehenge made out of, you guessed it, foam. Clearly this year's trip is a big departure from our big trip last December, which took us to the real Stonehenge. Still, it is no less memorable.

Alas, after a full-day of driving, we didn't make it to Nashville...yet - we're camping out in a hotel in Kingsport, TN until the wee morning hours.

Day 3 - Feet on the Ground in DC

Day three brought us to one of my favorite cities, Washington DC. We started our morning in Alexandria and took the oh-so-convenient Metro into town (why can't Atlanta have decent mass transit?). We had a delicious brunch at Clyde's (touristy I know, but their food and atmosphere is great) and then headed over to the Mall where we partook in the Natural History Museum and American History Museum. Next, we hoofed it over to the White House and Corcoran, and then over to Arlington where we watched the touching ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and paid our respects to JFK and Jackie O. After a night-cap of Oyster's at Hanks in Alexandria and a few glasses of vino, we were off to bed and ready for our next adventure.

Day 2 - "Two" much driving

The second day of our journey started out nicely, with the sun shining and the birds chirping. Despite the sunny start, our departure from Asheville in the early morning was prelude to a full day in the car. Despite our coin toss dictating a detour to Orlando, we drove east towards Raleigh, where we stopped to have lunch with my dad, step-mom and bro, which was one of the highlights of our trip.

After lunch, we decided that rather than hit the rainy Outer Banks we'd head north to D.C. We arrived in Alexandria at around 8 p.m. and that was our day. Day 3 will be better!

Day One - Not So Epic

So, my blog this week is supposed to be about "Troy and Kim's Epic Eastern Adventure." Today marks Day 1, which I can confess was not so epic. Here's my highlights for today:

- 3 incredibly nasty public restrooms
- 1 mini container of Pringles
- 4 pieces of Grannie's fudge
- 1 incredibly disappointing trip to the Grove Park Inn, which resulted in a quick reservation cancellation (despite incredibly gracious service)
- 1 inland sushi dinner (which was pleasant, at least until tomorrow)

Day 1 took us from the ATL where Troy was nursing a cold or the flu; to Highlands, NC, which we drove through in a flash thanks to plenty of rain and fog; to Cashiers, NC (aka No-man's-land); to Asheville, where we've had one misadventure after another. I'm already longing for home - and it's been less than 9 hours.

Things are starting to look up though - there's a Lindy Hop convention at our hotel! :) Here's to a third glass of wine before we go watch 'em.

Santa's Minions

Each year, thousands of Santas descend upon NYC in their holiday finery for Santacon, which is reminiscent to me of Mardi Gras or Gasparilla Day. Fueled by alcohol and creativity, these Santas bring the holiday to life - at least in their own, wild and crazy drunken way. I was witness to Santacon in person one year, not knowing what I'd stumbled onto and it was pure bedlam. Apparently there are Santacons in cities spanning the country - I've never seen one in Atlanta, but maybe it's time to start spreading the word for 2009.

OCD

If you love good food, print out your local Zagat Guide's "Top Rating" list for your area and eat local. Try a new restaurant every time you have occasion to go out to dinner and check them off. Don't worry, not everything on their list is a splurge. Not only will you find hidden gems you didn't know existed in your city, but you'll also frequently be supporting local businesses.

WOTM

I thought about doing a word of the day (WOTD), but I realized that would be really hard to keep up with. So, I'm doing word of the month (WOTM) instead. I always get stuck on a word that I think is particularly worthy of use over and over (and sometimes over) again.

Last month's word was "Terroir," which is worthy of a post in and of itself. I love the word because it is impossible to say. I was wracking my brain for weeks around how to say it properly - and then, voila, at the JS retreat our wine tasting guide (aka sommelier) said it! OK, pronunciation time - tear whar. Now I've seen it in an ad for Kendall Jackson. Who knows where it will pop up next. BTW, it loosely means "sense of place."

This month's word is "Trotting." A trot is a speeded-up walk, almost a run. My dog Collier is a great trotter. Horses all trot, so do pigs, cows, and people too. Just get a mental picture of it - "let's go trotting." Hilarious.

I can't wait to see what next month brings - I promise it won't be anything too cerebral.

Twilight Redux

So when I posted my first musings about Twilight a few weeks ago, I had no idea what sort of phenom I stumbled upon. I thought I just found a great song. Then a good movie. I saw the movie, and was interested in buying the book - which was pretty much sold out, BTW. Now, I'm gradually uncovering the world of Twilighters, some of whom are my friends that I had no idea had discovered the phenomenon before me. I am sinking my teeth into the first book now and can only hope to find the three sequels soon. Need a Christmas idea for one of your friends or loved ones? This may be the ticket - especially if she's a teen or middle-aged girl in need of a major distraction.

Santa's Spirit at Swansons

Yesterday my mom was feeling well enough to go for a drive. We hit the road and over the hills we went to Swansons, an amazing "hidden" gem on Seattle's northern side. I had no idea what I was in for - how great can a nursery be? As an admitted dirt-phobe, it made me want to "play in the dirt again" and break out my spade - and, it really got me in the mood for Christmas!

First stop, the reindeer pen, where two full-sized reindeer were taking a little nap before waking for their afternoon snack. Their hairy noses were so cute, and we got buttons with their likeness in exchange for a donation to the local humane society. Next up, the holiday train set. Then inside for a peppermint mocha and some Christmas shopping. It was pure bliss! If only my local Pike's Family Nursery would take some notes.

Vampires that Don't Suck...At Least I Hope Not

It's been a while since I've blogged - there's not been much happy news to report despite my attempts to keep a bright, shiny outlook on things. But at last, something comes my way that inspires my creative juices to flow again. And what is it you ask? Vampires!

Twilight HD Trailer

Twilight, a new vampire movie out in theaters on Nov. 20, looks good enough to take me out of my repressed childhood sheets and blankets covering my head every night for fear of getting bitten by a vampire phase. Every 10 or so years vampires have their day in the sun (er, moonlight) and this year's version features a British import in the title role, pegged as "the sexiest vampire" by People. I don't know much more about it yet except that it also features a new Paramore song that I like -- a lot. I'm going to check it out. After all, it is the first movie since Sex and the City that has piqued my interest this year -- and it'll be a fun outing after I'm full of Thanksgiving turkey.

ATL Steps it Up

If you've been wondering where all of the fun cultural outings in Atlanta have gone, have no fear there are two (count 'em, two!) exciting new exhibits coming up. The first, which I have to admit I'm a bit obsessed with, is the traveling King Tut exhibit. Since my mom took me to New Orleans as a child to see King Tut's fabulous gilded wares, I've had a soft spot in my heart for the Egyptian king - hmm, maybe I should break out my Cleopatra costume this Halloween.

The second is the High's installation of more than 100 Chinese warriors from the First Emperor's Terracotta Army. Touted as the 8thWonder of the World, the Army's discovery was one of the greatest archaeological finds in the 20th Century. Both begin this fall, so buy tickets now before they're gone.

Black and Blue

I've always loved the color combo of black and blue - and not in a bruisy way. This week's NYT Bill Cunningham slide montage straight from Paris fashion week shows the innately chic love it too - so go get yourself some for spring and wear it now. Black, always the best choice for clothing, is accented by sapphire blue or shocking pink. I'll be picking blue for myself. Toodles.

Parish the Thought

Atlantans, do you keep hearing about Parish? Does it live up to the hype??

I went for the first time tonight, and I have to say atmosphere, yes; food, no. Atmosphere is amazing - I felt like I was in New Orleans - no, New York - no, Atlanta - no, France. Ok, the last one is maybe a stretch, but it does have an amazing atmosphere of brownstone meets New Orleans quirkiness meets Atlanta quaintness.

The food was good, but I thought disappointing as I was expecting much, much more. See my other blog for details on the two varieties of "cheesecake" sampled. I got the veggie plate - locally-grown, organic veggies that were definitely yummy but nothing special - except for the fried squash. Maybe I'm spoiled by all of the great restaurants the ATL has to offer. Nonetheless, a worthwhile experience and I'll definitely go again for happy hour and the cute market downstairs. Bonus: To work in your daily exercise, go to the bathroom and push on the door - it weighs about 100 lbs.

Surrey With a Fringe on Top

I'm seeing stars...oops, I mean fringe, everywhere. I've been noticing it here and there, but this morning it struck me that it is on the tipping edge of becoming a big trend. Sure, this morning's inspiration came in the form of a biker chick with tassles hanging from her handlebars (suede pink, chocolate and black, mind-you), but I found it utterly adorable and it matched her black and pink "biker" jacket perfectly. On Monday's The Hills, LC's cover up was simple and white - except for the fringe hanging from the sleeves. And, fringed purses and boots are popping up everywhere. My current favorites from Gucci are pictured here. Add a little flair to your wardrobe by fringing it up -- just make sure it is tasteful.

Fat Girl's Nightmare

It is worth a new fat roll every now and then when you get ahold of something as sinfully delicious as Publix's Denali Bearfoot Brownie ice cream. Yum. With swirls of fudge that taste like memories of Magic Shell and little pieces of brownie in vanilla ice cream, I'm willing to pack on the occasional pudge. Get some.

Awful Assets

Hmmm, didn't "assets" used to be a good word? I just overheard on ABC News the phrase "no one wants to buy awful assets" - seems a bit like an oxymoron, eh? The economy is freakishly scary right now, but that doesn't mean you have to hunker down and become a hermit. Here are a few ideas for living on the cheap:

1. Get Outside! Ride your bike, plant a garden, walk the dogs, roll in the grass (I saw a cute dog doing this on the way home, looked like fun!)
2. Sell some stuff - Clean out your closet, garage, junk drawers and sell it all - I'm a big advocate for throwing away too, but some people don't like to get rid of stuff, so why not try posting on eBay or have a garage sale?
3. Check out the local scene - Anyone ever wander their own neighborhood anymore? There are great finds to to be had - personally, I love my local French bakery; and C'est Moi for glamorous accessories, furniture, coffee table books and much, much more; local nail salon; and pet supply store where my dog and I go to watch the hamsters and ferrets for hours.
4. People watch in the gas line - Go watch road rage at its finest at your local gas station. Take some pictures while you're at it.

Copycat

Gwyneth Paltrow is copying me. I'm very disturbed, because I can't compete with her money or influence -- and of course, she's married to one of the most amazing men on God's green earth.

I saw tonight that she's just launched a new web site called GOOP - I guess it's a Gwyneth co-op of sorts. Really, all she did is steal my concept for Itgredients and post it on a real web site instead of just a lowly old blog. What's next? She's going to ask for the help of friends and strangers to buy some old dilapidated French Chateau and try to open a bed and breakfast? Geez - can't people be original anymore?

P.s. - Just kidding, I think she's fabulous and if she read Itgredients, I'd be thrilled!

TV's Big Night

Award season is off to its official start, with last night's Emmy's being a forecaster of things to come. While the show itself was a bit dull (could they shorten the made for TV movie/mini-series category??), I was, as always, excited by what I saw on the red carpet. My pick for best-dressed was January Jones from Mad Men - original and angelic in her all white ensemble. Special honors also go to Brooke Shields, Heidi Klum and Christina Applegate. Best-dressed man was either David Piven or my Mad Men fave Jon Hamm.

I always thought the mid-30s (ok, maybe late 30s) were too old for Facebook, but my colleague Trudy convinced me to join -- and I did. It is so much fun and could suck away the whole day if you don't keep yourself at a distance. The oh-so-serious, holy grail of business -- The Wall Street Journal -- is seeing new life with a trendy take a la the New York Times. This Sunday marked the first edition of the paper's new magazine WSJ - and I like it! The team of contributors dug for some good stuff and the web site design is a marketer's dream, a few highlights:
